Our commitment to First Nations People

What is our commitment?

At the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG), we recognise and respect the deep cultural heritage, history, and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Nations people of this land.

We are committed to working in partnership with First Nations communities to provide culturally safe, inclusive, and respectful services for those we support.

How do we support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients?

We understand that culture plays a vital role in the identity, wellbeing, and decision-making of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Our approach includes:

  • Cultural awareness and training: Ensuring our staff have the knowledge and skills to provide culturally safe and respectful support.
  • Collaboration with communities: Working alongside First Nations peoples, Elders, and community leaders to understand and respond to the cultural needs of our clients.
  • Culturally informed advocacy: Advocating for the rights and preferences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients in ways that honour their culture and traditions.
  • Holistic support: Recognising the importance of family, kinship, and community in decision-making and support networks.

How do we engage with communities?

We are committed to building strong, respectful, and lasting relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Queensland.

By listening, learning, and engaging meaningfully, we aim to ensure our services align with the values and priorities of First Nations peoples.

Key initiatives include:

  • Partnering with community organisations to improve service delivery.
  • Providing resources that are culturally relevant and accessible.
  • Supporting continuous dialogue to improve outcomes for First Nations clients.

What is our commitment to reconciliation?

As part of our broader commitment to reconciliation, OPG works to:

  • address systemic barriers
  • promote equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We are guided by the principles of:

  • respect
  • partnership
  • self-determination.

We ensure that First Nations voices remain at the centre of our decision-making processes.
