What roles are available?

We offer a wide range of roles to suit different skills and interests, including:

  1. Guardian
  2. Guardian (appointed for legal matters)
  3. Community Visitor
  4. Legal Officer
  5. Investigations Officer
  6. Other roles

Guardian

Guardians make personal and healthcare decisions for adults with impaired decision-making ability. If the adult can’t make the decision, even with support, the guardian considers their views, wishes, and preferences before making the decision for them.

Community Visitor

As community visitors we:

  • Visit children in out-of-home care, youth detention, and other locations to ensure they’re safe and well.
  • Visit adults with impaired decision-making ability at visitable sites to ensure they’re receiving proper care.

Legal Officer

As legal officers we:

  • Advocate for children and young people in child protection or youth detention.
  • Assist adults with impaired decision-making ability with legal matters (excluding finance or property matters).
  • Provide legal advice and assistance to the Public Guardian.

Investigator

Investigators look into allegations of abuse, neglect, or exploitation of adults with impaired decision-making ability. Most cases involve financial abuse, especially of elderly people. If an allegation is substantiated, investigators take action to protect the person from further harm.

Where are we located?

Our head office is in Brisbane, where 60% of our staff are based. We also have regional offices in:

  • Ipswich
  • Townsville
  • Cairns

Additionally, about a third of our team works remotely as community visitors, offering flexibility and autonomy.

What is the recruitment process?

We advertise job vacancies on Smart Jobs, SEEK, LinkedIn, Ethical Jobs, and graduate and First Nations job boards.

Here’s how the process works:

1. Find a role and apply

  • Submit your application.
  • We’ll review it and let you know if you’ll move to the next stage.

2. Assessment

  • For some roles, you may complete a ‘take-home’ task, such as a role-play or content assignment, to give you a better idea of the job.

3. Face-to-face interview

  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview, either in person or via video call.
  • The panel may include OPG employees and an independent representative from another government department.

4. Decision

  • If you’re the most suitable candidate, we’ll offer you the position.
  • If you’re unsuccessful, you can ask for feedback.

5. Onboarding

  • Once you accept our offer, we’ll provide orientation, training, and ongoing support to help you thrive in your role.
