Legal services and tribunals

  • Seniors Legal and Support Services - a free face-to-face and phone service for adults 60 years and older with decision-making capacity who are victims of elder abuse or who feel mistreated or taken advantage of financially. Service centres are available in Brisbane, Cairns, Townsville, Toowoomba and Hervey Bay. Each centre’s phone number is listed on their website (scroll to bottom of page). The service can assist with:
    • legal information and advice
    • social work services
    • short-term counselling
    • advocacy
    • a referral to other legal, consumer and support services
    • representation in court or before tribunals (in certain circumstances).

  • Legal Aid Queensland - Legal Aid Queensland gives legal help to financially disadvantaged people about a range of legal matters including family and domestic violence, consumer rights, family law and anti-discrimination.   • Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal - the Tribunal (QCAT) holds hearings to consider the most appropriate actions in situations where decisions need to be made for an adult who doesn’t have decision-making capacity. QCAT’s customer service operators can explain to you how the tribunal process works, particularly when an attorney acting under an Enduring Power of Attorney may be exploiting an adult.
